Shangchai has very strict requirements for the technology, quality and performance of high-altitude engines. It has conducted a large number of strict and high-standard tests on the adaptability, reliability and durability of each high-altitude engine product.

Compared with plains, the air pressure, oxygen content, temperature and humidity on plateaus are much lower. The intake state of engines has a significant impact on performance. In some plateau areas, the temperature can reach -30℃ or below in winter, and the oxygen content is only 50% to 80% of that at sea level. If the engine is not adjusted accordingly, it is prone to problems such as power reduction, high fuel consumption, high exhaust temperature and black smoke emission, and at the same time, the service life of the engine will be shortened.

To address the issue of engine performance decline under high-altitude climate conditions, when developing engines, Shangchai Power will readjust and test high-altitude engines through dedicated high-altitude laboratories (such as environmental chambers or engine intake and exhaust simulation systems).

The higher the altitude, the lower the air pressure. The boiling point of liquids will decrease as the air pressure drops. The boiling point of engine antifreeze will also decrease, and the engine cooling system is prone to the “boiling over” phenomenon. The antifreeze boiling over increases the evaporation of water, requiring frequent addition of cooling water. This can easily lead to the formation of scale in the cooling system, reducing its heat dissipation capacity and causing a vicious cycle of the “boiling over” phenomenon. To avoid such a situation, Shangchai Power will conduct special tests on engines used in high-altitude areas. Engines that pass the tests will not be affected in their cooling systems.

Due to the decrease in engine power, the power performance of the equipment also declines accordingly. The engine needs to operate at full load for a long time, which is prone to overheating. Overheating causes the engine oil to become thinner, reducing its lubricating performance and accelerating the wear of internal engine components.

The plateau area poses challenges to the acceleration performance, braking system and engine matching of the entire vehicle. In response to such climatic conditions, Shangchai conducts a large number of field tests every year to ensure that no problems occur in actual working conditions and to guarantee that the normal operation of customers’ equipment is not affected.

SDEC‘s high-altitude engines, featuring high quality and strong power, have become the preferred power source for various types of construction machinery and equipment. In the future, Shangchai Power will remain true to its original aspiration, forge ahead with determination, complete extreme tests with higher requirements and standards, and serve the vast number of customers with better products.
